Four tips for choosing an interior design consultant

Since the show "Trading Spaces" first debuted on The Learning Channel, people have become captivated with redecorating their home for next to nothing - all with the help of an interior designer, of course.

As the show continues in style, interior designers nationwide are enjoying a new-found popularity.

Surveys show that less than 6 percent of consumers have ever employed the services of an interior designer. But while most people may feel apprehensive about hiring someone to help them create a new look in their homes, it can be less intimidating than you think.

Robin Baron, founder and chief executive officer of Robin Baron Home Inc., said she changed her focus from fashion to home design because she felt that fashion was fleeting and that a home is more enduring. "I love affecting people's lives. And the most effective way to do this is through helping people create a livable home."

So whether you're looking for help with color schemes or a complete room remodeling, Baron offers these tips as a guideline for helping you hire an interior designer.

  • Get organized. Interior designers will want to know who the space is being designed for and what activities will go on there, as well as a time frame and budget. Be prepared to answer their questions. Keep in mind that the more information you provide, the more successful your designer will be in meeting your expectations.
  • Interview designers. As with any home improvement project, it is important to interview several people and to become familiar with differences in personality, style and business methods. Remember that you will be working closely with this person and you will want someone who listens to your ideas and concerns.
  • Ask to see a portfolio. All designers should have a portfolio of past work, a list of relevant experience and client references. Don't be afraid to check out the information provided.
  • Hire a designer. Once you've interviewed several designers, take time to compare their estimates. But don't base your decision on price alone. Keep in mind that differences in each proposal reflect variables such as level of service and quality.

Robin Baron Home Inc., provides an interior design professional at no cost, along with high quality, affordable, private label furniture and accessories. For more information, log on to www.robinbaronhome.com or call (212) 262-1110, ext. 101.
