In response to demands from consumers for more energy-efficient acrylic block windows, Hy-Lite Products has developed and introduced Solar Blocks - a new, thermally efficient acrylic block. Designed to meet stringent new energy codes adopted in various areas of the country, Solar Block windows are available nationwide. Fixed and operable windows made with the blocks can be installed in any new residential construction or renovation project to help improve energy efficiency where solar heat gain is an issue.
The Solar Block helps homeowners save money by preventing infrared (IR) rays from penetrating the home, where they can damage floor coverings, plants and furnishings. By "blocking" the rays from entering the home, they make it possible for homeowners to spend less money cooling the interior of their homes.
The secret to its energy efficiency is a micro-layer of metal adhered to the inside surface of one side of the block during the manufacturing process. The side of the acrylic block facing the exterior of a project has the coating applied, giving the block a slightly tinted look that helps deflect the sun's rays.
"New technology has provided us with a more thermally efficient block product than you can find anywhere on the market today," says Karl Hatrak, product/process development director for Hy-Lite Products. "We believe this type of innovative product development will become a standard in the future as companies move toward introducing products that meet and exceed new codes being introduced throughout the country."
The Solar Block windows can be included as part of a Low-E window package in a home. Available in 2-inch thick blocks, in 6- and 8-inch widths, the Solar Blocks come in clear and clear-frosted wave patterns, and are offered in vinyl and aluminum frames.
"Now it's possible to have more control over the penetration of infrared rays into the home," says Hatrak.
"Whether adding a massive 7-foot square acrylic block picture window over a bathtub or an operable casement window to a kitchen, homeowners can do so with confidence that Solar Block windows are energy efficient, help protect their privacy and also serve as a beneficial design element to a home."
