In your own Space

One of the guest rooms is soft and delicate in style with its wis teria pattern.

Owning a home at the beach is only a dream for many, but it is a dream come true for Diane Crecca, owner of this 2,200-square- foot country cottage in Belmar. Crecca also owns a co-op near her job in New York City, but she and her dog Sushi enjoy spending their free time at her home on the Jersey Shore all year long.

Crecca purchased this house nine years ago and began the design transformation herself. Last spring she called Anna Maria Mannarino of Mannarino Designs Inc., Holmdel, for additional assistance. The first task at hand was to find window treatments that fit nicely in the home's country style. In the living room and dining room she replaced aluminum blinds with Hunter Douglas Nantucket Window Shadings, which are elegant, translucent fabric blinds. In the living room she also added stationary panels in a quilt pattern to frame the windows. In the sun- room she used Hunter Douglas Woven Wood shades, which have the beauty of natural bamboo and can be adjusted to let the desired amount of sunlight in.

A stained-glass hanging graces the window in the stairway landing.
The next project was to organize all of the treasures Crecca had collected over the years.

"Diane does a lot of traveling and she has collected lots of nice things, such as rugs, earthenware, and Provençal dolls. She also has many antique pieces," Mannarino said.

Mannarino pulled together and grouped all of these special pieces in a very intriguing style throughout the home.

The original hardwood floors and moldings from when the house was built in the early 1960s add to the home's cozy cottage feel.

The house features a spacious living room with a comfortable, oversized sofa and a beautiful fireplace. The charming country dining room is painted in the ever-popular faux-finish technique, and even the ceiling has a decorative mural to add elegance to the room. The airy sunroom has lovely wicker furnishings.

The kitchen and three bathrooms of the home are works in progress, and are slated for renovation this summer.
The country dining room is perfect for hosting a dinner party.

The upstairs features a quaint master bedroom with an alcove that serves as a sitting area. There are also two inviting guest rooms - one decorated with a wisteria flower pattern and the other decorated in a beach theme.

The sunroom makes the most of the available sunlight with window treatments that welcome the sunshine.
Though the kitchen is slated for renovation, a mural was recently put on the blank wall to help open up the room.
